SAN FRANCISCO SKATEPARK UPDATE
GOLDEN GATE SKATEPARK - IN PROGRESS
Waller St. at Stanyan in Golden Gate Park is a closed off street that has been dedicated to become a skatepark by Rec. and Park. In 2009 Left Side and the S.F. Skateboard Association pushed to get an ordinance passed allocating money to build a permanent skatepark. A neighborhood organization HANC fought back saying that the community doesn't want a skatepark and that it would bring the wrong elements to the neighborhood. Plans for the skatepark fell apart. The S.F. Skateboard Association put out a study showing the need for a place to skate in the neighborhood and negotiated for the site to become a 3 phase trial project similar (example: pavement to parks projects called 'parklets'). The trial project would start out temporary and then grow according to the needs of the users. The first phase plan was donated by a landscape architecture company called Rebar, who designed the 'parklet' project with granite ledges off of 16th St. The plan is designed for the sites multi-uses such as: skateboarding, a seasonal farmers market, food truck festival, and overflow parking for the Kezar Auditorium. The first phase plan is simple but very crucial to starting the project. The plan lays out nine granite blocks zig-zagged throughout the long narrow street with a 'jersey' highway barrier at the very west end. Phase 2 has not been officially planned yet, but a draft of the plans shows a mini-ramp, banks, and skateable sculpture.
Status: Phase 1 complete. Granite Ledges are installed. This phase is a protege for the city to collect data such as noise, trash, graffiti, and crime. This data will effect the second phase of the project.
Programs: Temporary ramps at Waller St. every Friday 12 - 5 pm provided by Rec. and Park's 'Shred and Butter' skateboard program.

DUBOCE SKATEPARK - IN PROGRESS
Duboce St. at Mission St. under the Octavia Overpass is a empty lot dedicated by Caltrans to become a skatepark. In 2009 the S.F Skateboard Association pushed for a skatepark at the empty lot once used for skateboarding. The plaza style park is designed to replicate famous S.F. skate spots with tiled floors, EMB ledges, 3 up 3 down steps, transitions, and a snake run.
Status: A skatepark designer, Newline, was picked and construction plans have been finished. A contractor has not been picked yet. San Francisco's Rec. and Park Department is working out details, and has not signed the contract to lease the land from Caltrans yet.
